Radio-Frequency Ablation

Radio-frequency ablation (RFA) has become a cornerstone in interventional pain management, offering targeted, drug-free, and minimally invasive relief for patients struggling with extremity pain.

Understanding Radio-Frequency Ablation

Radio-frequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses controlled heat generated by radio waves to interrupt pain signals transmitted through targeted nerves. During the procedure, a small insulated needle is guided—usually with fluoroscopy or ultrasound—near the problem nerve. After confirming the correct location with mild electrical stimulation, radiofrequency energy is applied to create a heat lesion that disrupts the nerve’s ability to send pain signals to the brain.

This technique is particularly valuable for patients who have not found adequate relief from medications, physical therapy, or steroid injections. Because RFA does not rely on systemic drugs, it avoids the side effects associated with long-term medication use and can reduce the need for repeat steroid injections.

RFA for Extremity Pain

In the extremities, RFA is used to address pain arising from damaged or irritated peripheral nerves—most commonly around the knee (genicular nerves), shoulder, elbow, and sometimes the wrist or ankle. For shoulder pain, RFA has produced significant improvements in function and patient satisfaction, with results often lasting many months.

What to Expect During and After RFA

The entire procedure usually takes 30 to 90 minutes, and patients can go home the same day. Local anesthesia and light sedation are used to ensure comfort. Some temporary soreness or swelling may follow, but relief typically begins within 1 to 3 weeks as the targeted nerve becomes inactive.

The pain relief can last from 9 to 24 months, depending on individual nerve regeneration rates. If the nerve regrows and pain recurs, the procedure can be safely repeated.
